Northern Lights
Is it the wrath of the gods? That is what the ancient people thought caused the Northern Lights, otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis. The Finnish word is "revontulet" meaning the fox's fires. The ancient Finns believed they were caused when a mythical fox waved its tail.
There is a scientific explanation, about solar wind, but we prefer the mystical one for this magical shifting of light in the night sky. In northern Finland they may be visible on clear nights up to 200 times a year. The Aurora Borealis is also visible in the south, even in Helsinki, as many as 20 times a year, in areas away from city lights.
