Cross-country skiing
The entire world is blue and white. The snow is a meter deep and there is not a single cloud in the pale blue sky. The spruce trees are white cones bowed down beneath a mantle of snow. The best way to explore this winter landscape is on cross-country skis. Glide through the silent forest and across a frozen lake. Climb to the top of a hill and then tuck your ski poles under your arms for your reward, a long glide down the other side.
The peak season for skiing is February-March in southern and central Finland and March-April in Lapland. In the north-western corner of Lapland - the Kilpisjärvi area - the season extends well into May. You can take lessons in cross-country skiing at major ski centers, where skiing equipment is nearly always available for hire.
